OET INFORMATION

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language test designed specifically for healthcare professionals. The test is accepted as proof of English proficiency for visas, study, registration and employment in healthcare in a number of countries around the world. As a result, it is popular with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals because it uses real healthcare scenarios and assesses your ability to use English as a healthcare professional

In the UK, the OET is accepted by the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Medical Council (GMC) as an alternative to IELTS.

Although both OET and IELTS are accepted by the NMC and GMC, more and more healthcare professional are choosing OET. These are the main differences between the tests:

OET

A medical English language test written specifically for healthcare professionals

Every part of the exam relates to real workplace scenarios; the speaking and writing sub-tests are profession specific

The writing test assesses your ability to communicate effectively when writing in a healthcare context (e.g. a letter of referral)

The speaking test assesses your ability to communicate effectively in the workplace and assesses the clinical communication skills needed at work (e.g. building relationships with patients and their carers)

IELTS

An academic English exam used to test language level and often used for entry to university

Topics are general and are therefore not specifically related to healthcare

The writing test assesses your ability to produce the type of text most likely to be produced for a university course (e.g. a report and an essay) rather than a healthcare related text

The speaking test assesses your ability to communicate clearly on a range of more general topics which are not specifically related to healthcare

  • Four parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
  • Each part of the test assesses your understanding of English in a workplace-related healthcare context
  • The writing and speaking sub-tests are specific to your profession

You can take the OET test in over 40 countries, including in Cardiff, Wales.

OET are responsible for registration, payment, and issuing of results. Any questions about the test should be sent to OET direct. You can register for the exam here.

The cost for the test is 587 Australian dollars.
